Online Therapy in Massachusetts

Call it virtual, call it telehealth, or call it online therapy.  They are all different names for making therapy more accessible for a lot of people.

I saw a story recently by CBS News (CBS Boston-Why is it so hard to find a therapist?), about how difficult it can be to find a therapist right now. So many therapists are no longer accepting insurance, and sometimes it can feel like an added challenge to find someone you truly connect with.

Telehealth therapy brings therapy to you, making it more convenient and accessible. I'll admit, I'm a little old school and still really value sitting across from someone, being present with them, and bearing witness to their stories in person. But telehealth has opened up a whole new world of possibilities, allowing more people to access therapy in ways that work for their lives.

Why choose Online Therapy?

There are lots of reasons someone might choose telehealth over in-person sessions. For some, it's simply a matter of distance. I work with several clients remotely who live quite a ways from my office and appreciate being able to attend sessions without a long commute.

For others, it's about fitting therapy into an already busy schedule. Work, school, or childcare responsibilities can make it difficult to get to an appointment during my office hours. Virtual sessions allow you to take a break in your day without having to factor in travel time or spend more time away from your other responsibilities.

Sometimes, illness or caregiving responsibilities make it difficult to leave home. You may be dealing with your own health concerns or caring for someone you love who can't be left alone. Telehealth can make it possible to continue prioritizing your own well-being during these times.

And for some people, it's a combination of things. You might prefer to meet in person when your schedule allows and switch to a virtual session when life gets a little hectic. Whatever your reason, I love that telehealth gives people more options and makes therapy accessible to more people.

A Few Things to Know About Telehealth

There are a few guidelines to keep in mind when attending virtual therapy. Due to licensing and insurance requirements, you must be physically located in Massachusetts at the time of your appointment.

It's also important to have a private, secure location where you can speak openly without worrying about someone else overhearing your conversation. Ideally, you should be alone in a space where you feel comfortable and can focus on yourself and your therapy.

If you're attending a session from your car, it must be parked in a safe location, and you must be alone. Your car can't be moving during your session.

Think of virtual therapy as an extension of my office. The setting may be different, but the goal is the same: to provide a comfortable, confidential space where you can talk openly about what's going on in your life.

A reliable Wi-Fi or cellular connection is also important. There aren't many things more frustrating for by the therapist and client, than trying to have an important conversation while the screen freezes or every other word gets lost because of a poor signal. And trust me, I know technology doesn't always cooperate!

What If We Have Technical Difficulties?

Technology isn't perfect, and technical difficulties happen. They can be frustrating for both of us, especially when we're in the middle of an important conversation.

If you're having trouble connecting or your session keeps freezing, just send me a text. I may be able to help troubleshoot the issue, or we can try an alternative telehealth platform that may work better.
